Shelter from the Storm – Bob Dylan
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Written by: Bob Dylan
From: "Blood on the Tracks" (1975) = Take 4, September 16, 1974

Alternate version (= (Take 1, September 16, 1974)
on "More Blood, More Tracks - The Bootleg Series, Vol. 14" (2018)
           (with bass and piano)
and “Jerry Maguire - Music from the Motion Picture” (1996)
           (mix without bass and piano)

Tabbed by: maguri
Tuning: Open-E / Standard

Two versions here:
1. Open-E tuning (E-B-E-G#-B-e)
Tip: To avoid breaking stings when tuning up to Open-E, I mostly tune down
to Open-D (D-A-D-F#-A-d) and then use a capo 2nd fret to get up to E.
2. Standard tuning

This is the basic pattern of the changes in the verse and the instrumental
interludes. Whatever your strumming pattern may be, try to change the
chords where indicated. I tabbed it out for the open tuning here, but the
rhythm is the same if you use the standard tuning, of course.

[Verse 1]
      E Emaj9/D# A Asus2 E
’Twas in another lifetime, one of toil and blood
     E Emaj9/D# A Asus2
When blackness was a virtue and the road was full of mud
  E Emaj9/D# A Asus2
I came in from the wilderness, a creature void of form
      E Emaj9/D# A Asus2 [ E ]
“Come in,” she said, “I’ll give you shelter from the storm”

[Verse 2]
    E Emaj9/D# A Asus2 E
And if I pass this way again, you can rest a- ssured
     E Emaj9/D# A Asus2
I’ll always do my best for her, on that I give my word
     E Emaj9/D# A Asus2
In a world of steel-eyed death, and men who are fighting to be warm
      E Emaj9/D# A Asus2 [ E ]
“Come in,” she said, “I’ll give you shelter from the storm”

[Verse 3]
      E Emaj9/D# A Asus2 E
Not a word was spoke between us, there was little risk in- volved
E Emaj9/D# A Asus2
Everything up to that point had been left unresolved
E Emaj9/D# A Asus2
Try imagining a place where it’s always safe and warm
      E Emaj9/D# A Asus2 [ E ]
“Come in,” she said, “I’ll give you shelter from the storm”

[Verse 4]
      E Emaj9/D# A Asus2 E
I was burned out from exhaustion, buried in the hail
E Emaj9/D# A Asus2
Poisoned in the bushes an’ blown out on the trail
E Emaj9/D# A Asus2
Hunted like a crocodile, ravaged in the corn
      E Emaj9/D# A Asus2 [ E ]
“Come in,” she said, “I’ll give you shelter from the storm”

[Verse 5]
E Emaj9/D# A Asus2 E
Suddenly I turned around and she was standin’ there
     E Emaj9/D# A Asus2
With silver bracelets on her wrists and flowers in her hair
    E Emaj9/D# A Asus2
She walked up to me so gracefully and took my crown of thorns
      E Emaj9/D# A Asus2 [ E ]
“Come in,” she said, “I’ll give you shelter from the storm”

 [Extra verse] – Take 1 (September 16, 1974)

E Emaj9/D# A Asus2 E
Now the bonds are broken but they can be re- tied
E Emaj9/D# A Asus2
One more journey to the woods and the holes where spirits hide
       E Emaj9/D# A Asus2
It’s a never ending battle for a peace that’s always torn
      E Emaj9/D# A Asus2 [ E ]
“Come in,” she said, “I’ll give you shelter from the storm”

[Verse 6]
     E Emaj9/D# A Asus2 E
Now there’s a wall between us, somethin’ there’s been lost
  E Emaj9/D# A Asus2
I took too much for granted, I got my signals crossed
E Emaj9/D# A Asus2
Just to think that it all began on a long-forgotten morn
      E Emaj9/D# A Asus2 [ E ]
“Come in,” she said, “I’ll give you shelter from the storm”

          E Emaj9/D# A Asus2 E
Well, the deputy walks on hard nails and the preacher rides a mount
    E Emaj9/D# A Asus2
But nothing really matters much, it’s doom alone that counts
        E Emaj9/D# A Asus2
And the one-eyed undertaker, he blows a futile horn
      E Emaj9/D# A Asus2 [ E ]
“Come in,” she said, “I’ll give you shelter from the storm”

[Verse 8]
E Emaj9/D# A Asus2 E
I’ve heard newborn babies wailin’ like a mournin’ dove
    E Emaj9/D# A Asus2
And old men with broken teeth stranded without love
     E Emaj9/D# A Asus2
Do I understand your question, man, is it hopeless and forlorn?
      E Emaj9/D# A Asus2 [ E ]
“Come in,” she said, “I’ll give you shelter from the storm”

[Verse 9]
     E Emaj9/D# A Asus2 E
In a little hilltop village, they gambled for my clothes
  E Emaj9/D# A Asus2
I bargained for salvation an’ she gave me a lethal dose
  E Emaj9/D# A Asus2
I offered up my innocence and got repaid with scorn
      E Emaj9/D# A Asus2 [ E ]
“Come in,” she said, “I’ll give you shelter from the storm”

E Emaj9/D# A Asus2
Beauty walks a razor’s edge, someday I’ll make it mine
           E Emaj9/D# A Asus2
